My name is Pratik Patel, MS, RD, CSCS, I am the founder of South Asian Health Protocols

I am a first generation born Hindu Indian from Kansas.  For the past 20 years, I have studied health, nutrition, fitness, and recovery. I spent over a decade working and coaching for pro and college football teams..

I have taught my concepts to dozens of elite college and NFL teams and numerous Fortune 500 companies. I am a Registered Dietitian and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Today I am a health and performance coach to South Asians and my passion and mission is to help South Asians all over the world lose fat, build muscle, get fit, and improve their health and performance.

 Growing up with Indian genetics

I’m first generation born Indian here in America. I have HORRIBLE Hindu genetics, which I’ve spent a lifetime battling.

I loved sports and played them as a kid but always struggled with my weight and physique and couldn’t overcome my skinny fat Indian heritage.

I had dreams of being lean, muscular, strong, and proud of how I looked but couldn’t find success no matter what I tried or how hard working and diligent I was in the gym and in the kitchen.

I never was able to get the same results as or look like my friends on the team, and I felt like a failure by comparison. I carried that weight mentally, socially, and spiritually for years.

Becoming an (out of shape) NFL strength coach

Although professional sport was never in my future (name you favorite Indian NFL player. Go ahead, I’ll wait), I stuck with sport and decided to pursue a career in coaching. I kept training, kept getting bigger and stronger, and kept learning.

I obtained two performance degrees from Kansas State University, and soon broke into college sport. I was lucky enough to coach at Michigan State, compete for a National title at Oregon, and even break into the NFL where I worked for the New York Giants.

But things still weren’t right for me. I knew a lot about performance nutrition, but if I’m truly honest, I wasn’t walking the walk. The event that crystallized it for me was in March of 2019.

I went back to my alma mater to accept an alumni award- a big deal- and for the first time in years I had the opportunity to take a professional victory lap, and re-connect and hang out with my peers. Instead, I spent my one night back in Kansas, in my hotel room, eating the 3 desserts my fat ass had ordered from Houlihan’s, then passed out.

I felt like a fraud. Here I was in charge of some of the fittest, healthiest athletes on earth, but I was almost 225lbs and 30% body fat. I was strong yes, but I was not healthy at all. It was time to make change.

Making the decision to walk the walk

For the first time in years, I took a step back and did a proper evaluation and assessment of my health status and eating and training habits. I put myself through the same process as my NFL players and then some.

This was NOT going to be a quick fix. No 30 day challenge or juice fast BS. I had to put good systems in place and make consistent long term progress. I didn't care how long it took, I was going to stick with it until I got the body I aspired to when I was in my teens.
I broke down the big rocks into different categories and got to work. I made sure to look at health as a whole and leave no stone left unturned, the same way we operated with the NFL players.

Not only this but I made the important change of actually acknowledging and accounting for my Indian heritage, things that are unique to us like our genetic predispositions, our food culture and our lifestyle culture. Previously I had just followed “best practice” but this time I decided to make my plan fit my identity, not the other way around, which had caused me so much failure before.

Transforming my mind, body & health

2020

2024

I made a LOT of changes over the subsequent months and eventually years:

I began to consistently track my nutritional intake
No more eating off the cuff, I planned out my meals
No more clean plate club, I listened to my body
No more snacking or liquid calories
No more fearing carbs, just picking better, slower releasing carbs

Training-wise, I didn’t change so much. I still did the same important things I’d been doing before: lift heavy and consistently, and do some hard conditioning. What changed most for me was outside of the gym. I began to regularly get a minimum of 10,000 steps per day. I began to look at chores and housework as a way to burn more calories and achieve my shredded, healthy body sooner.

Likewise, I made big changes in my lifestyle and sleep habits. I gathered sleep data and ensured I got a minimum of 7 hours of high quality sleep a night. No screens or blue light, sleeping on a grounding mat, last meal and supplements about 1-2 hours before bed, read until I passed out (I read 76 books in that first year!).

I spent more time outdoors in nature. I stopped saying “no” to people and events. I took up meditation and breath work. I put my body and my health at the center of everything that I was doing. And it was life changing.

Fit, healthy and happy at 40 and beyond

The results were life changing for me. I’m almost 40 years old now, with two young kids and the house, and I’m growing a business, but my body composition and health is on a par with guys half my age.

I feel and look better than ever before, without any medication, TRT, peptides, or unnecessary/excessive/crazy biohacks. And I have the health data to back it up.

My mission today is to be the coach I needed when I was 15. The kid who thought that his culture and genetics had doomed him to a lifetime of poor health and low self image. I want to help him- and other Indians like him to live healthier, more confident and energetic lives.

If you’re ready to make a change in your life, I’d be honored to travel on that journey with you. To see if working with me would be a good fit for, click here now to schedule a call with me.

Enter: The South Asian Health Protocols Framework

The Results Speak for Themselves. This framework has helped me and countless South Asians achieve incredible results:

  • Fat loss and muscle gain
  • Improved metabolic health and glucose control
  • Better cardiovascular health and blood pressure
  • Enhanced sleep, recovery, and stress management
  • Improved confidence and energy

For the first time, many of my clients have been able to lose weight where they couldn’t before, get off medications, and finally feel in control of their South Asian health.

Health is a holistic lifestyle built over years

Does this sound familiar? Whenever you start a new health and fitness regime, you attack it with 100% intensity: fad workouts, hours in the gym, restrictive diets, all the “expert” influencer tips and tricks. No pain, no gain, right? The harder you work, the more you suffer, the faster you get results.

Don't get me wrong, it works, but only for a few weeks. Sooner or later, your willpower breaks, or your body starts to fight back. And a healthy body and lifestyle is built over years, not weeks. You're shooting yourself in the foot.

Now throw in some challenges that are specific to the Indian and South Asian community: a genetic predisposition to easily gain fat while struggling to build muscle, a diet high in sugar and saturated fats with little to no animal protein, and a culture that puts food and eating together along with non-stop focus on work at the center of family life.

How do I know? Because I did it! In my early years, before the degrees and working in professional sport, my training history was a vicious cycle repeating itself again and again: starve myself and overtrain to make a little progress, fall completely off the wagon, then gain back all the fat I lost. And the cycle would start again, only I was more demoralized than before.

It wasn't until I was many years into my career as a coach and dietitian that I started to view health through a holistic lens. I needed to understand that healthy living is a lifestyle and an identity, not a crash course or program that I would stick to for 8 weeks, then go back to my regular life.

I needed to develop sustainable habits that work with, rather than against, my own personal genetics, my Indian heritage, and how I like to train and eat. Not only this, I needed to look beyond just diet and exercise. I had to focus just as much on my mindset, my sleep, and my recovery.

For myself, the results speak for themselves. I'm down almost 50 lbs from my peak body weight, and I am the happiest and healthiest I have been in my adult life, despite nearing 40 years of age. These changes are also typical of the clients that I work with.

If I can impart just one piece of wisdom to you, it is this: lasting change that dramatically transforms your health and appearance is a years-long process that's impacted by every aspect of your daily life. If you can't make it enjoyable and sustainable, you'll self-sabotage before you reach your goal. Play the long game.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good

Another powerful lesson that I had to learn throughout my own health and fitness journey, and one I frequently have to help my clients learn, is that a diet, training program, or health regimen is only as good as the behavior that backs it up. The best plan on paper, with inconsistent or poor-quality decision-making, is almost as good as no plan.

A major psychological trap that I fell into early on, and that led to the self-sabotage I described, was the idea that I had to be perfect in order to succeed. The second I made a less-than-optimal choice in my eating, the second I missed a workout, the second I started to feel stressed or unmotivated, the whole plan would go out the window.

I would binge eat, walk out of the gym if a session felt harder than normal, or I would abandon my entire plan. Think how crazy that is: it's like getting your credit card bill and seeing that you spent more than you should have that month, then deciding that sticking to a budget is pointless and maxing out every card that you have.

With the benefit of hindsight and maturity, I now realize that I was setting myself up to fail. I placed unrealistic expectations on myself—to be perfect, which of course nobody is—and as soon as I fell short of those expectations, I would succumb to a spiral of self-doubt and just revert back to my comfortable old habits.

Make no mistake: nobody is perfect; everybody falls off the wagon sometimes; everybody lacks motivation sometimes. If you want to make long-term improvements to your health and appearance, not only do you need to expect this to happen, you need to plan for it.

By building in regular mini-breaks from the plan—like free meals where you can eat anything, workouts where you can just spin your wheels or do what you like, maybe skip a couple of days in the gym—you'll stop seeing these deviations as catastrophic failures. Rather, you'll just see them as part of the plan, allowing you to maintain more enthusiasm and consistency over the long term.

Take home: never let perfect be the enemy of the good. A massive part of my work with clients is actually helping them to realize this and maintain that mindset, more than anything related to diet and exercise.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

The third and perhaps most important pillar that separates South Asian Health Protocols from the rest is that we treat every client as an individual.

Imagine this scenario: with all the body shapes, sizes, weights, and appearances there are in the world, would it make sense for us all to wear the same clothes? Of course not! This is without even touching on personal style—some people just feel comfortable dressing a certain way, despite what fashion has to say.

So why do we do it with diet and exercise?! For the longest time, I was guilty of believing that there was one right way to eat and train. If a particular training program or way of eating was working for someone else, it would work for me too, right? And if it didn't work, I just didn't want it badly enough or I wasn't diligent enough in implementing the plan. Maybe you've been guilty of this too? Copying and pasting a training plan from the internet, or adopting the same diet as an influencer or celebrity who you admire.

The tendency to try and emulate the behaviors of the people who exemplify the appearance or health that we aspire to is understandable, but ultimately flawed. Do you have their resources? Do you have their likes and dislikes? Do your schedules match? Do you have the same kind of family life and cultural background? The answer is probably not, so how could you expect the same results?

So why aren't we honest about this online and in the media? Unfortunately, simple sells. People would rather be sold a sexy-sounding, one-size-fits-all solution, rather than be told that a healthy lifestyle is a complex decision-making process that has to incorporate a lot of conflicting variables.

It took me a long time and a lot of trial and error to realize that the best program, the best diet, is the one that best fits me, my needs, my lifestyle, my cultural background. And the same is true of my clients.

True, the principles of weight loss, muscle gain, and good health are universal. But the choices we make while adhering to those principles are highly individual and can have a massive impact on your success or failure.

This is why every client of South Asian Health Protocols is treated like an individual. We are going to find a plan that works for you, whether that is centering your diet around foods that you like to eat or fit your religious restrictions, programming workouts that align with your lifestyle and work schedule, or even something as simple as planning for one big Indian family meal per week.

Growing up with Indian genetics

I’m first generation born Indian here in America. I have HORRIBLE Hindu genetics, which I’ve spent a lifetime battling.
